One of the few media organizations transmitting from the Gaza Strip, Al Jazeera, is no longer available to view on Israeli television after the cabinet decided unanimously to shut down its local operations.

The station's relationship with the Israeli government has reached a new low as a result of Israel's first-ever ban on a foreign media outlet. Al Jazeera's owner, Qatar, is hosting peace talks; the suspension would complicate matters.
It was also authorized by the unusual order from the hard-right government of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to raid the station's East Jerusalem office and seize broadcast equipment.

After the vote, Netanyahu denounced Al Jazeera as a “Hamas mouthpiece” and said in a statement that the news organization's reporters had “harmed Israel’s security and incited against soldiers.”
